National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month History

History of National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month

Since 1981, high officials all across America have worked their hardest promoting the importance of staying sober while driving during the month of December, proclaimed National Drunk & Drugged Driving Prevention Month or National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, and it all stemmed from one woman and her resolve.
On May 3, 1980, thirteen-year-old Cari Lightner was struck and killed by Clarence Busch in a drunk driving accident. When police arrested Clarence, they found this was not his first occurence, even down to a hit-and-run drunk driving fine less than a week before his accident with Cari. At the time, driving while intoxicated was a misdemeanor that was barely prosecuted, meaning that Busch was very unlikely to have gone to jail.
This unacceptable fact motivated Cari’s mother, Candy Lightner, to take action. The result was the non-profit organization known as MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Candy’s movement quickly grew across the nation. She pushed to a more strict definition of what drunk driving was, having legislators pass stricter laws and prosecutions that included jail time and license suspensions, up to having President Reagan establish 21 as the minimum drinking age and appointing Lightner as part of a commission developed to tackle the issue.
To this day, Candy continues to advocate for anti-drunk, drugged and distracted driving legislation as president of We Save Lives. “I am not against drinking. I am for responsible drinking. We don’t let people walk around with a loaded gun in our neighborhood. But we let them drive when they drink.”

Each December, we go out for fun, parties and drinks with family and friends. But we ask you to stop and think for a second about being responsible. December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month and since the holiday season has a higher accident rate than others on average, it is important to echo the message of consciousness of being in a proper state behind the wheel. According to the National Safety Council, over 40,000 people died in alcohol-related traffic accidents last year. So this year, stay safe during the holidays.

Animals serve an important part in our lives, being those friends and companions that give us love unconditionally. They protect our homes, and are there whenever we need them, asking for nothing but love and tenderness in exchange for all they give. Operation Santa Paws Day is a reminder that we need to return that love, and remember them at this most special time of year.

Every year there is a rush of animals that, through abuse and neglect, wind up abandoned in shelters and animal rescues everywhere. All too often they’re given as birthday or Christmas gifts, and simply abandoned as the shine wears off the newest puppy or the kitten gets grown up. Whatever the case, millions of animals world-wide end up in shelters, and there simply isn’t enough resources to support them all. This is where Operation Santa Paws Day comes in.

History of Operation Santa Paws

This holiday was organized by Justin Rudd in 2001, this holiday was originally put together in Long Beach, California to help support their local shelters and rescues. While anyone can choose to participate by donating new toys, treats, food or money to help keep these dedicated servants of the animal public going. Justin has spread his campaign far and wide, getting stores nationwide to participate in this humanitarian effort.

How to celebrate Operation Santa Paws

Celebrating Operation Santa Paws days can happen in a number of ways, from those already mentioned to more dedicated efforts. This holiday is about the animals, but without the support of those individuals who love them and dedicate themselves to their welfare, there’d be nowhere for them to go. When you stop by with your donation of supplies for the furry residents of your local shelter, don’t forget to bring down some tokens of thanks for these hard working saviors of our favorite little beasties.

Operation Santa Paws is still primarily operating out of California, but with the efforts of friends and companies, this phenomena can spread. Visit your local stores and enlist their help in collecting supplies, ask if you can put out a collection poster and post a wish list at their locations. (These things are available on http://www.hautedogs.org/santapaws as templates). Also, be sure to contact the shelters in your area that will benefit from your efforts, and let them know they have an ally in their mission to help animals.

National Short Girl Appreciation Day History

History of National Short Girl Appreciation Day

When the cups are on the tallest shelf of the tallest cabinet, it’s not always fun to be short. But how great it is that you’re always at the top of the human pyramid? And when have you ever hit your head on a door frame? National Short Girl Appreciation Day was started to celebrate the smaller ladies in our lives, and maybe help them grab that out-of-reach item. However, being a “short girl” has meant different things throughout the years and places!

Tiny doorways in the 1700s proved that while a 5’2” woman today might be considered on the short side, they would have been completely average in a different time! Even average men between the 12th and 16th centuries would be considered short by today’s standards. These days, the average female height is 5’4”. Though buildings, roads, and cities are only getting larger worldwide, short women are keeping up!

Today, women are taller on average than our ancestors even just 100 years ago. Still, women in Indonesia, Bolivia, and the Philippines are on the shorter end of the global average, hovering around just 5 feet! This proves that “short” totally depends on where you are.

Short women make a huge impact. Emilia Clarke (Mother of Dragons!) stands only 5’2”, as does makeup and reality TV mogul Kim Kardashian. Lady Gaga checks in at 5’1”, and superstar Olympic gymnast Simone Biles is only 4’8”. These ladies prove that whether it’s onstage, on the Olympic podium, or anywhere else, being short does not stunt your success.

Do you love literature? Do you feel you have an inner creative streak you’ve never yet acted on? Do you have a brilliant idea that you’re afraid isn’t long enough to make into an entire book, but that you really just want to finally write down? If so, Short Story Day could be your chance to discover a new passion and create something you can be proud of. You don’t have to have written anything before to start writing now.

After all, everyone has to start somewhere. All you need to become a writer is a pen and paper, or a computer, or a typewriter, if you will―the rest is entirely up to you. So if you have a story in you that’s waiting to be told, don’t wait and celebrate Short Story Day today!

Learn about Short Story Day

Short Story Day takes place on the shortest day of the year… Very clever, right? It also gives you the opportunity to broaden your knowledge by reading some short stories. Take some time out from all of the chaos that goes on pre-Christmas and enjoy a moment of literary calm. Sheer bliss, right?

Not only does this day give you the ability to read interesting short stories, but you can write your own. It does not matter whether you want to keep it to yourself or you intend to publish it to the world, grab your pen and start writing! Writing a short story can be a fun and even therapeutic way to spend your time. Plus, you never know; you may uncover a skill that you never realized you had.

Every year on Short Story Day, there is a theme, so we recommend taking a look at this, as it can lead you in the direction of the sort of books you should read and write on this date. Of course, we won’t tell anyone if you decide to go against the theme. After all, you may simply detest the genre of book suggested! Nevertheless, it is a fun way to read something that you would probably never considering reading!

You may be wondering what counts as a short-story anyway. Most short stories tend to have a word count between 1,000 and 4,000. However, some can have a word count three times the size of this and still be deemed as a short story. There are no hard rules on the word count front. For stories less than 1,000 words, they tend to be called “flash fiction” or a “short, short story”.

In order to be considered a short story, it typically needs to be read in one sitting. It tends to focus on an incident that is very much self-contained or it could be a number of incidents that are linked together. The intent is to evoke a single mood or effect. One of the great short story writers of our time, William Boyd, said the following about short stories:

“They seem to answer something very deep in our nature as if, for the duration of its telling, something special has been created, some essence of our experience extrapolated, some temporary sense has been made of our common, turbulent journey towards the grave and oblivion.”

History of Short Story Day

As the name itself suggests, a short story is a story that can be read in one sitting. As with many concepts in the realm of the humanities, it can be hard to determine exactly what qualifies as a short story, but most contemporary definitions tell us that a short story must have anywhere between 1,000 and 20,000 words.

Short stories became especially popular in the late 1700s and early 1800s, with ones like Richard Cumberland’s “The Poisoner of Montremos” and Washington Irving’s “Rip van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” becoming instant classics. Some of the most famous short stories have also been written by authors such as Ernest Hemingway, Franz Kafka, Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, Leo Tolstoy and Stephen King.

How to Celebrate Short Story Day

As mentioned before, the absolute best way to celebrate Short Story day is to finally get that idea you’ve been toying around with in your mind on paper. Not everyone is destined to be a world-renowned writer, but you owe it to yourself to try, so no matter whether your idea is for a scare-filled horror story, a complex mystery, a funny little anecdote, or anything else… If you find that you enjoy writing, that first little short story may continue to evolve until it’s a collection of short stories.

Or maybe you will get so into the art of storytelling that you will be inspired to continue to develop what was originally supposed to be a short story until it ends up being a complete novel? And then…who knows? It may just get published. But even if it doesn’t, you will have found a new hobby, something that allows you to express yourself, like other people paint and yet others photograph things that fascinate them.

If writing is something you don’t feel any desire to try, however, Short Story Day can still be an interesting and enjoyable experience that broadens your horizons. And because reading a shirt story does not take that much time, you can celebrate this day without having to take the day off work! “Harvey’s Dream”, a rather sad exploration of what Alzheimer’s disease does to a person, is considered by some to be one of Stephen King’s best short stories.

“Romantic Weekend” by Mary Gaitskill is dangerously dark and sensual, and will let you know just how much you’ve been missing out on reading “Fifty Shades of Grey”. And if literature that evokes feelings of dread and tension, then Joyce Carol Oates’ “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” is guaranteed to raise all of the hairs on the back of your neck until the very last page.

All in all, this day is not just for writers, it is for everyone who appreciates the art that is good literature. There are a lot of great short story authors, so spend some time researching them and reading their different works. This includes the likes of Deborah Eisenberg, James Baldwin, John Cheever, Mavis Gallant, Isaac Babel, Katherine Mansfield, Anton Chekhov, and many more.

The great thing about short stories is that it does not take a lot of time for you to read them and determine whether or not an author’s style is right for you. Make sure you take the time to share the works you enjoy online. Not only because others may enjoy them, but it helps the author to raise their profile and reach more people too.

Flashlights, as they are known as in the United States, have been a fundamental way to help us see the paths that we walk in the pitch black night. They help us to keep an eye out for dangers in the path or help us find our way back to where we began walking from. Today we’re going to look at the history of Flashlight Day, so let us grab our flashlights and go searching in the cave of the past!

History of Flashlight Day

Let’s take a look at the history of the flashlight itself and see how it came into creation. The flashlight is a portable, battery-powered light source that is called a torch outside of North America.

With the invention of the dry cell and miniature incandescent electric light bulbs, it soon allowed the first battery-powered flashlights to be possible around the year 1899. In 1887, the very first dry cell battery was invented. Unlike previous batteries, it used an electrolyte paste instead of a liquid electrolyte.

This was the very first battery actually suitable for portable electrical devices that were safe, as it did not spill or break easily and worked in any orientation, unlike the liquid electrolyte batteries. The first mass-produced dry cell batteries started coming in around 1896, and the invention of portable electric lights soon followed suit.

Flashlights had become extremely popular in China around the 1930’s, with around sixty companies making flashlights for the population of China, some even selling for as little as one-third of the cost of equivalent imported models that were being shipped out at the time.

How to celebrate Flashlight Day

To celebrate this day there are a few ways to do so actually. The first option is to gather a bunch of friends together in a group and hide in the woods or thick areas behind our homes, one person does not have a flashlight, and they must search for the others, who have to flash their lights once every five minutes as to give the seeker a clue as to where they are.

A second way to celebrate is to make a box fort, and in every corner of the fort, cut a hole in the top with enough room to hold the flashlight in place and use them as spotlights. How many ways can you think of to celebrate Flashlight Day? We’re sure you can brighten up the world with your ideas!

Good vision is something that we all recognize the importance of. However, it is something that a lot of us take for granted. After all, you know what they say; you don’t realize what you have got until it is gone. For a lot of people, being blind is something that they have lived with their entire lives.

For others, it is something that has crept upon them at a later age. There are then those that have good vision, but they live in fear of this taken away from them. In fact, blindness ranks as one of the top fears for aging people around the world today.

Gift Of Sight month has been designed to help and raise awareness regarding the importance of eye health. A lot of people realize that routine yearly physicals are imperative in terms of detecting or preventing a lot of conditions. However, very few people appreciate just how important a yearly eye exam is when it comes to preventing disorders and diagnosing diseases at the earliest stage.

Can you honestly say that you have had an eye exam in the past year? If you have, we applaud you! If you haven’t, it’s time to book one. It does not matter whether you are seven-years-old or you will soon be celebrating your 70th birthday, an annual eye exam is something we should all have.

History Of Gift Of Sight Month

Versant Health established Gift Of Sight Month. This month is dedicated to helping people realize how important it is to have healthy eyes, and how amazing and lucky we are to have full vision. It has been set up so that people realize that seeing an eye doctor on a regular basis is important so that we can keep enjoying the ability to see the world around us. The month is all about action and education. Gift Of Sight month also advocates for low-cost eye exams in order to prevent issues.

Why Routine Eye Exams Are Important

There are a number of different reasons why routine eye exams are important. The main reason is so that any problems are detected at the earliest possible stage. When eye issues are not picked up on right away, they can become worse and worse. This means that you could end up losing your vision. This could all be avoided if you had a yearly exam, as the optometrist would have been able to pick up on the issue and take the right course of action to prevent it from getting worse. This is even more so important when you consider the fact that a lot of eye diseases do not give warning signs.

Statistics About Vision Impairment

The WHO has released some interesting statistics on visual impairment. These statistics certainly help you to get a better understanding of how common eye health issues are and, therefore, why it is critical to make sure you keep on top of your eye health. Here are some of the statistics they have released…

  • Around the world, there are a minimum of 2.2 billion people who are blind or have a vision impairment.
  • Of these people, at least one billion people have a visual impairment that could have been prevented or has not been addressed yet.
  • Of these one billion people, this includes individuals that have a severe or moderate distance vision impairment or blindness that has been caused by a refractive error that has not been addressed.
  • Most people that have vision impairment are over the age of 50-years-old. However, there are children that have problems with their vision, which is why it is so important to make sure you have routine eye checks irrespective of your age.
  • The main cause of vision impairment around the world are refractive errors that have not been corrected and cataracts.

How to celebrate Gift Of Sight Month

There are a number of different things that you can do in order to observe Gift Of Sight Month. However, there is no denying that the most important step is to book an eye exam. This is especially the case if you have not had a routine eye examination within the past year. Not only should you make sure you book an eye exam, but you should commit to doing this every year in order to protect your eye health.

You can also post helpful tips on different things that people can do in order to keep their eyes healthy. Even if you reach one person, you could potentially save them from losing their vision in the future, so it really does make a difference.

Another way to observe Gift Of Sight Month is to do something for people in society who are already blind. There are lots of different charities out there that are doing work for those who are visually impaired. You may decide to volunteer or you could fundraise. There are lots of great ways to fundraise today, including fundraising events, such as fun runs and bake sales. If you are a crafty person, you may want to create items for Gift Of Sight Month, selling them and donating the proceeds to a charity of your choice.

Finally, a great way for you to observe Gift Of Sight Month is to get in touch with all of your friends and family and encourage them to book an eye exam. You could even offer to book the exam for them so that the only thing they have to do is show up.
