Maritime Day 2021

Maritime Day

Creativity has got to start with humanity and when you're a human being, you feel, you suffer. You're gay, you're sick, you're nervous or whatever.

Marilyn Monroe

You’ve probably been noticing a theme about May and its holidays, almost all of them are centered on getting back out and into the world. With the warming sun and halting rains, are you the least bit surprised? Still, Maritime Day isn’t necessarily about the ocean at large, but specifically about those men and women who spend their lives working on and around it. It specifically focuses on their safety, security, and all the little elements that make their lives, and a little bit of remembrance for how much we have to thank them for.

History of Maritime Day

Which is what exactly? Well, maritime transport and work has been important since the human race first put something that floats in the water and decided to use it to get somewhere or do something. Maritime Day commemorates it and the incredible effect it’s had on our lives. Just to start with the most basic point about it? Sea Trade has been the largest carrier of Cargo in the history of the world, even the Silk Road didn’t see as much cargo and trade-goods moving along it as the oceans have.

The wind is ever-present, the water buoyant and the siren-call of days at sea strong in everyone apparently. The one thing that is a water-transports weakness is things that must be delivered in a timely manner. Reliable the system is and always has been, fast it isn’t, at least in today’s world. So if you know someone who has worked in the sea trade or still does, Maritime Day is the perfect day to take a moment to thank them for all they did, and let them tell stories about their time on the salty black.

How to celebrate Maritime Day

Get out to the oceans and the bays and the ports. See what we’ve wrought and how things have changed over the years. Learn about the regulations they have to follow and how maritime safety has been a constant and evolving concern and still remains one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Go out and marvel at the ships and the huge dinosaur like cranes that hulk over the docks transporting cargo containers from shore to ship and ship to shore as they help make the world’s economy turn. Maritime Day isn’t a day for being inside, it’s a day for going out and exploring this important part of the world’s past, present, and future. Maritime Day – To The Docks!

Celebration Sherlock Holmes Day May 22, 2021

Sherlock Holmes Day

World-renowned detective. Most portrayed character in history. Icon. Who are we speaking of? Why, Sherlock Holmes, of course! Any self-respecting amateur detective would guess that! The ultimate detective archetype, the character of Sherlock Holmes has been a hero to millions since his creation well over a century ago. So can all agree he more than deserves his very own day? Of course, elementary my dear Watson!

History of Sherlock Holmes Day

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories, says the character was originally inspired by Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for whom Doyle had worked as an assistant. Like Holmes, Bell was famous for his ability to draw broad conclusions from minute observations.

Francis “Tanky” Smith, a policeman and master of disguise who was Leicester’s first private detective, is also thought to have influenced the character. Doyle’s first Sherlock Holmes story first appeared in print in 1887 and continued to be published for the next forty years, until shortly before the author’s death. During this time, the detective had countless adventures, usually accompanied by his loyal friend and assistant, Dr. Watson.

How to celebrate Sherlock Holmes Day

With there being so very many different versions of the iconic character, the ways of celebrating this day are virtually unlimited. If you enjoy reading and have somehow never read these wonderful stories (gasp!) it is high time you did.

The weather in May in Most parts of the world is quite nice, so an afternoon lounging lazily in the shade of a tree and getting lost in the world created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one great idea. If you’ve already read them or feel like giving your eyes a bit of a break, how about watching one of the many shows or movies made about Holmes?

Regardless of who your favorite Hollywood celebrities are, you are sure to find someone you love breathing new life into the Sherlock Holmes character. From Sir Ian McKellen to Robert Downey Jr., to Christopher Lee, Benedict Cumberbatch and dozens of others, there are more than enough versions of Sherlock Holmes to choose from.

If you feel like being a bit more active, Sherlock Holmes Day might be the perfect time to play a little detective, yourself. Do you have a feeling there might be something up at work that you’ve been dying to find out about but that none of the managers seem to want to talk too much about? Has someone been stealing your sandwiches out of the refrigerator? Or maybe you’ve been getting some enamored texts from an unknown number and would love to know who’s sending them? Whatever little mystery is keeping you awake at night, let today be the day you decide to find out what’s up!

And if you have children, Sherlock Holmes Day is the perfect day to get them interested in a real literary classic that never gets old, and maybe get them into reading as a whole in the process. How you end up celebrating Sherlock Holmes Day is a mystery to us, and one that’s up to you to solve!

Celebration Golf Month May 2021

Golf Month

Aaah golf, the sport of old rich people who have the time to spend hours upon hours on the rolling green hills of a golf course, following a tiny white speck.

Many of us who have never even attempted to play golf are sure we wouldn’t like it simply because of the people that are most often seen playing it don’t seem to be the most exciting of individuals. But those of us who have tried see this pretty differently, so join us this Golf Month as we show you how much fun this sport can be!

The History of Golf Month

The modern game of golf originated in 15th-century Scotland, but the game’s ancient origins can be traced back to the Roman game of paganica, in which participants used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. Some historians assert that paganica spread throughout Europe as the Romans conquered most of the continent almost 2,000 years ago, and eventually evolved into the modern game.

Other historians believe that chuiwan a Chinese game played between the eighth and 14th centuries, was the father of modern golf as we know it. A Ming Dynasty scroll dating back to 1368 entitled “The Autumn Banquet” shows a member of the Chinese Imperial court swinging what appears to be a golf club at a small ball with the aim of sinking it into a hole and would thus seem to support this version of history.

Golf Month was created just recently to encourage people who may not think they would like golf to give it a try and benefit from all this sport has to offer.

How to Celebrate Golf Month

The best way to celebrate Golf Month is to get out and play some golf! If you’re someone who already plays golf, maybe try getting some friends or family members who have never tried to join you for a few hours on the course. And if you’ve never tried, it’s the perfect time to! You’ve tried scuba diving and paragliding, and you’ve even learned to play chess…so why not golf?

If you’re still on the fence, consider some of the ways playing golf can be good for your health:

  • Playing golf gets you outdoors and keeps you there. Be honest, how much time do you really spend outside? Seeing as how most jobs are stuffy office jobs these days, we assume your answer to this question is, “Not to much”. A game of golf is guaranteed to keep you outdoors and breathing in that fresh air for approximately 4 hours!
  • Golfing burns plenty of calories. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. The average golf player walks between 5 and 7 kilometers during one game, which burns about 1,000 calories. And all without breaking a sweat!
  • Golf has been proven to reduce stress levels. Thanks to the hours spent either almost alone or conversing with fellow players on a wonderfully green backdrop, golfers tend to be relaxed and more ready to face stress and challenges than players of other sports.

And as if all this is not enough, consider this: countless famous actors, singers and other celebrities adore golf, including Snoop Dogg, Bill Murray, Alice Cooper and Justin Timberlake, so chances are you may even meet one of them on the course one day. So what are you waiting for? Get celebrating Golf Month today!

Celebration Accounting Day May 11, 2021

Accounting Day

While accounting may seem like a boring profession, it’s vital to every business out there. Without accountants, people won’t get paid promptly nor be able to understand their debits and credits. Even with an accountant, these can still be hard to understand. Accounting is work that isn’t something many people enjoy.

Accountants enjoy the prospects of so much that they form their whole career around managing numbers and company finances. That’s why, for those mathematicians out there in the industry, there is Accounting Day to celebrate!

Learn about Accounting Day

Accounting Day is all about promoting the accounting profession. It seeks to give people the opportunity to network among their colleagues and aims to provide the opportunity to continue education for those interested in the industry.

It is also a great day to celebrate the role of an accountant. After all, no matter whether you run your own business or you are a sole trader, it is likely that you have required the services of an accountant at some point or that you will need their services in the future. From filing tax returns to ensuring business accounts are up-to-date; accounts play a critical role in the financial security of companies all over the world.

Of course, Accounting Day is not only about those who are already in the profession, but it is also a day that is important for anyone who is looking to get involved in the accounting industry. There are a lot of great opportunities in this industry, and there is always going to be the need for accountants, so this is certainly a good sector to get involved in. Some of the skills that are required in order to become an accountant include:

  • Proficiency in IT
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Teamworking ability
  • Ability to manage deadlines and organizational skills
  • Business interest and acumen
  • Ability to reflect on your own work, as well as the broader consequences of financial decisions
  • Integrity
  • Self-motivation

If this sounds like you, there are a number of different ways to get involved in accounting, from taking a degree at university to doing an apprenticeship. Take some time to research the options out there and plot your route to the top!

History of Accounting Day

Accounting Day was first held in 1972 by the San Diego chapter of the California Society of CPA’s. Some remember the Institute of Management Accountants as the original organizers of the event.

Nevertheless, it was created to help inspire younger generations into an accounting career. In 1976, other organizations were invited to celebrate the holiday and Accounting Day became an official holiday celebrated everywhere. While accounting has a longer history than its holiday, it deserved to have its own holiday.

Today, Accounting Day is operated by the Accounting Education Institute. Accounting Day provides plenty of networking opportunities, giving people a chance to have educational opportunities in the fields of accounting and finance.

The AEI contributes to many scholarship funds for major universities and works with them getting college students into accounting. They also help them get real-world applications for job opportunities. Organizations are encouraged to participate in accounting day to help their members connect and provide education for potential future accountants.

How to celebrate Accounting Day

If an accounting organization near you is hosting an Accounting Day event, then why not celebrate this day by attending the event! Through attending, you’ll be able to meet with some of the best accountants out there and network with them for future job opportunities.

This day represents the perfect opportunity for you to hone your networking skills as well. After all, it is all about accountants connecting with one and other. There are a number of different things that you can do on Accounting Day to help you improve your networking. This includes the following:

  • Create professional and stylish business cards – Are your business cards due an update? Perhaps you never seem to carry enough with you? If that’s the case, Accounting Day is the perfect opportunity for you to ensure your business cards are on-point and to get an ample supply printed.
  • Brush up on current events in the accounting industry – It is always a good idea to make sure that you are up-to-date with all of the latest headlines in the sector so that you will be able to join in the conversation with ease when at an accounting event.
  • Practice describing your company in one sentence – It is important to be able to describe what it is that your company does in one sentence. You can then elaborate on it if the other person is interested. However, if you cannot say what your business does in one clear sentence, you’re going to lose the other person’s interest from the very beginning.
  • Rehearse your 30-second elevator pitch – This is another activity you can try on Accounting Day. If you were stuck in the elevator with someone for 30 seconds, how would you pitch your business and your services?
  • Practice your handshake – Your handshake needs to be confident and firm. It should also be accompanied by eye contact and a smile. Get your friend involved and get them to help you practice your handshake.

If you’re thinking of school, then try an accounting degree and see what career opportunities open for you. Share this holiday with friends and family, talk about the value of accountants in our daily lives, and say thank you to an accountant that you know personally.
